Upton on Severn v Barkers’ Butts
Barkers selected a heavier than usual front 5, 90 stones plus and counting, which just suited Upton’s pitch which is on the flood plain of the nearby river Severn.
Barkers kicked off, retrieved the ball from Upton and did not take a backward step for the rest of the game. The forwards drove over Upton’s line and the try was given to Hooker
with Nathan Tilsley
converting. 0 - 7. Following the Upton players dissent Barkers restarted with a penalty, won the line out looked like scoring but before they could Upton again fell foul of the referee and Tilsley made it 0 - 10. The pressure continued with good service from scrum half Rob Fisher and fly half Tom Stokes
giving Sam Montague
the opportunity to make a direct powerful run and take the first of his four tries with again Tilsley converting. 0 - 17. The third try was a flowing ¾ movement incorporating Matt Knight
, aaron newman
joining the line from the fullback position and Montague touching down Tilsley again converting. 0 - 24. More forward pressure followed and this time it was Montague who passed to Knight and again Tilsley converted. With 2 minutes of the first half remaining Upton were reduced to 14 men following a dangerous tackle.
Half time Upton 0 Barkers 31.
From the restart it was more of the same. Barkers went straight onto the offensive and were promptly penalised for not releasing the ball. Uptons kick did not find touch but was gathered by aaron newman
who made ground and passed to Chris Priest who was brought down just short of the line. Barkers won the scrum and Fisher passed to Montague who took the 5 points with Tilsley adding the extras. 0 - 38. Everything was going Barkers way, Uptons clearing kicks became passes to the opposition, bouncing balls went straight into the hand of a Barkers player and the muddy conditions did not constrain the footwork and ball handling skills of the Barkers players, forwards and backs alike. With the game won Glenn Southwell
was replaced by Peter Crossfield. Uptons discipline deteriorated and a yellow card reduced them to 13 men. Barkers 2 remaining subs were brought on, Jamie Whitehall
at hooker and the aptly named Ben Upton
replaced Chris Priest on the wing. Meanwhile the points were regularly being increased. The non try highlights were Tom Stokes
’ lightening breaks and just about everything in the rugby catalogue from a rejuvenated Paul Scanlon
who is in his 17th season as a 1st team player. There were no more conversions but 4 more tries, 1 each from Montague and 2nd row juggernaut Mark Croxfod and 2 from Matt Knight
Knight. The game was ended on a low note however with the sight of Sam Montague
being carried from the pitch and taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.
Final score. Upton on Severn 0 Barkers’ Butts 58.
